2026 Honda NT1100 DCT Test Ride: The Spiritual Successor to the ST1100 and ST1300

2026 Honda NT1100 DCT Test Ride

For many motorcyclists, the Honda ST1100 and ST1300 still represent—for some—the golden age of Honda touring bikes. Comfort, wind protection, range, and reliability were their hallmarks. After several years without a true successor, Honda introduced a motorcycle in 2025 that embodies this philosophy… but adapted to today’s realities.

No, the Honda NT1100 does not replace the ST models. Rather, it is their spiritual successor, carrying on their legacy as long-distance touring bikes. However, it also incorporates modern technology, lightness, and agility—qualities that today’s riders expect. In short, it modernizes the concept.

Design: Simplicity and Efficiency

True to Honda’s philosophy, the NT1100 features a streamlined design where form follows function. Nothing is superfluous. Every element of the motorcycle contributes to the rider’s comfort, stability, or protection.

The silhouette is sleek and rather high.

Whereas the ST1100 and ST1300 boasted a wide, massive silhouette, the NT1100 appears much sleeker and more dynamic. Its proportions are more compact, its front end more tapered, and its taller stance may vaguely evoke the world of adventure bikes, from which it derives. However, it remains firmly a touring bike. The more you look at it, the more you realize that every detail serves a purpose. Its design evokes maturity, balance, and functionality—qualities that perfectly match its role as a long-distance traveler.

Engine and Transmission: The Promise of a Relaxed Ride

Beneath the fairing beats a 1,084 cm³ water-cooled inline-twin engine derived from the Africa Twin: 102 ch (75 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. In fact, this engine also powers Honda’s Rebel 1100. It has plenty of reserves to adapt to the personality of an adventure bike, a custom bike, or—in this case—a touring bike.

The engine prioritizes abundant torque available from low RPMs rather than explosive power when twisting the throttle. Acceleration feels natural and effortless. There’s certainly plenty of power in reserve when needed, but you don’t really feel the need to tap into it. First, because the engine and DCT automatic transmission work together admirably to maintain a more than adequate pace, yet always in a calm and exceptionally smooth manner. Also, a roaring twin-cylinder isn’t quite as sexy to listen to as an inline-four… So there’s no point in revving it unnecessarily.

The engine and DCT transmission combination is remarkably efficient.

Speaking of the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), this gearbox is one of the bike’s standout features. Gear changes are quick, smooth, and always happen at just the right moment. The transmission makes perfect use of the available torque, resulting in a very pleasant, seamless ride.

On its own, the twin-cylinder engine is excellent. Paired with the DCT, however, it reaches a whole new level. The two seem to have been developed specifically for each other. The result is a surprisingly relaxing ride that reduces fatigue in heavy traffic and allows the rider to focus fully on the joy of riding.

There is indeed a manual mode that allows the rider to take control using the paddles on the handlebars. However, it’s rarely used due to the transmission’s excellent performance.

Chassis and Handling: Effective as a Tourer

The chassis is derived from that of the Africa Twin and consists of a steel frame with an aluminum swingarm. The result is a rather tall motorcycle that requires the rider to lift their leg quite high to mount it. Once on the road, you’ll be pleased to find an excellent balance between rigidity and comfort. Handling is precise, and the bike feels very reassuring thanks to its stability. The manually adjustable Showa suspension is supple and effectively absorbs road imperfections, prioritizing rider comfort.

Despite weighing 248 kg with the DCT, the bike handles effortlessly at low speeds, thanks in particular to its tight turning radius. You instantly feel the balance at the handlebars and sense the bike’s impressive agility.

In the city, pulling away from a stop is a breeze, and gear changes are incredibly smooth. There’s no need to anticipate with the clutch—you simply twist the throttle to accelerate. The bike is very easy to position, and braking is exceptionally smooth and controllable.

The bike is docile and easy to position exactly where you want it.

On the open road, everything happens smoothly but with great efficiency. The engine responds with a certain authority when you twist the throttle, almost with a burst of energy when you really open it up. The DCT operates seamlessly, handling upshifts and downshifts with great discretion. Tackling a winding road on this bike is a real pleasure thanks to its confident handling. As for fuel economy, you can achieve 5 L/100 km if you ride leisurely. But expect 5.5–6 L/100 km at a more aggressive pace.

Riding Experience: A Pleasant Surprise

The riding position is comfortable no matter the distance.

The riding position is upright and offers plenty of room for the upper body, though the legs are slightly more bent on the footrests. Despite this, it didn’t cause any issues during a 300-kilometer ride. I even noticed that upon arrival, I wasn’t tired considering the distance I’d just covered.

Space for the passenger on the motorcycle is rather tight, and other motorcycles offer more room on the seat. It’s worth noting that the motorcycle is equipped with all the features you could want for comfort (heated grips, cruise control, electronic aids, etc.).

Its comprehensive instrument panel, featuring a 6.5-inch color TFT screen, is prominently positioned in front of the rider’s eyes, and the information is very easy to read. It’s also worth noting that Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and CarPlay and Android Auto apps (via a wired connection) are included, bringing modern convenience right at your fingertips.

The windshield allows some wind turbulence to reach the helmet.

The NT1100 is designed for long-distance travel. The generous 20.4-liter fuel tank provides an impressive range of up to 400 km! Plus, the storage space in the optional side and rear cases is cavernous. As for the windshield, it offers some protection from the elements for the rider, but there are still pockets of turbulence that hit the helmet. That’s a shame, because while we can overlook the lack of a windscreen on a sport-touring bike, we expect better wind protection—especially since we know Honda is capable of small miracles in this area.

Can the NT1100 challenge the Gold Wing’s dominance?

The question may arise, but it won’t remain a topic of debate for long because the design philosophies of the two motorcycles are very different.

The Honda NT1100 does not threaten the Gold Wing and will not replace it. It lacks the Gold Wing’s luxury, the aura of its spread-wing logo, and the mechanical nobility of its legendary six-cylinder engine. The Gold Wing remains the undisputed queen for those who prioritize, above all else, absolute comfort, very long-distance rides for two, and trips where every kilometer must be traveled in almost regal silence.

The NT1100 is for those who want the pleasure of riding.

On the other hand, the NT1100 responds remarkably well to the new expectations of a large portion of motorcyclists. Lighter by about 130 kg, much less expensive to buy and operate, more agile, and easier to handle in everyday life, it represents a much more user-friendly vision of motorcycle travel. The NT1100 is aimed more at motorcyclists who want to retain the pleasure of riding a more agile machine without sacrificing the ability to travel long distances.

Without dethroning the Gold Wing, the NT1100 redefines what a modern touring motorcycle should be. In a market where versatility, ease of riding, and running costs are becoming increasingly important, it’s no exaggeration to say that, for a great many motorcyclists, the NT1100 strikes an excellent balance between comfort, performance, and riding enjoyment.
