The 2025 Can-Am Commander XT-P 1000R is a versatile all-terrain vehicle in the crossover category. It is designed for both leisure and demanding work with its tipping bed. At first glance, it impresses with its massive appearance and high-end positioning with the XT-P version. It offers a robust chassis, generous protective elements, and a finish that embraces its “premium” utility aspect. Discover it with the 4Riders Magazine team.

Style and design
The 2025 Can-Am Commander XT-P 1000 R has a decidedly muscular design. Its angular lines, high hood, and generous ground clearance inspire solidity while confirming its rugged look. You can tell that the materials and protections have been designed to withstand the rigors of off-roading. The bodywork elements are functional with air intakes, bumpers, and wide running boards, while contributing to the aggressive aesthetic.

The cabin stands out for its improved utility. We get bucket seats, an ergonomic console, and well-placed storage.
However, we regret the acoustics and some of the interior finishes, which are too dull. This is not in keeping with the sleek look of the XT-P version. Overall, the Can-Am Commander is elegant in its “rough” appearance. It clearly lets you know that it’s ready to work while also being available for recreational outings.
The Rotax 1000 R engine

Under the dump bed, the Rotax 1000R engine delivers torque and low-end power. The engine has a willing character with its 100 horsepower available. That means it responds readily to the throttle and has the torque to effectively pull the vehicle out of more difficult situations. Whether it’s steep climbs, mud, or towing a trailer, the Commander is always up to the task. The useful range is wide, making it easy to drive without constantly having to play with the pedal. There are also driving modes to limit the responsiveness of the accelerator, which is sometimes too quick. Even in work mode, you might want a little more smoothness on very rough terrain.

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) of the 2025 Can-Am Commander XT-P 1000 R works well with the engine. The calibration is smooth and allows you to effectively harness the power at different speeds. You feel a sense of control when you push the vehicle hard.
When pushing the machine hard, it’s noticeable that the engine noise and resonance in the cabin could be better controlled. The sporty character is exciting, but at the expense of acoustic comfort. Long rides at sustained speeds are impacted in this regard.
Driving impressions

Driving impressions of the 2025 Can-Am Commander XT-P 1000R now. First of all, it’s worth mentioning that it’s a very versatile side-by-side vehicle, whether on technical sections, more relaxed trails, or in a more sporty mode. The Commander XT-P aims to be both comfortable for long days and capable of pushing the limits.
When it comes to work, it performs well in this segment. It has a towing capacity of 2,000 lb and a 600 lb load capacity in the bed. That’s more than enough for tasks around the cottage, for example. In short, it’s a thoughtful compromise between stability, performance, and utility.
FOX shock absorbers on the XT-P

Driving the Commander XT-P immediately gives the impression of a stable and reassuring vehicle. The suspension with FOX PODIUM QS3 shock absorbers is one of its strong points. It absorbs shocks gradually, filtering out irregularities without transmitting large impacts to the occupants. Of course, the quick adjustment with the 3-position ratchet (Soft, Medium, Firm) does an impeccable job. It’s simple, and no one gets lost in an overly wide range of adjustments with screws like on other shock absorbers. You get 14 inches of travel at both the front and rear. Also, the 13.5-inch ground clearance gives the machine enough capability to tackle large obstacles without fear. Even if you find yourself scraping a little, the underside is completely covered with a UHMW plate on the XT-P.

When cornering, the suspension geometry and low center of gravity provide solid handling. The Commander doesn’t try to tip over, allowing you to attack the trails with confidence at a good speed.
DPS power steering
Driving precision is also very good. The steering is direct and provides enough feedback to give you a good feel for the grip. In addition, there is DPS: the dynamic electronic power steering system. This can be adjusted to three levels to suit your preferences and enhance feedback from the road to the steering wheel. For novices, it adjusts according to speed to provide optimal road feel. Hence the name “dynamic.”
Another noteworthy aspect is the braking system. The 220 mm brake discs on each wheel and two pistons per caliper bite with confidence. Deceleration is gradual and controllable. In addition, the sensitivity allows you to easily modulate the effort, which is invaluable when descending or in avoidance situations. Stopping distances are impressive for a vehicle of this weight.
Huge tires and rims to hold up…

One feature worth mentioning is the huge 30-inch diameter XPS Trac Force tires. These provide maximum traction on muddy, sandy, rocky, and other types of terrain.

The XT-P version features bead locks. This accessory is very useful in rock crawling situations. To effectively navigate rocks, you need to reduce air pressure to increase traction. This device prevents the tires from slipping on the rim.
Neighbor Marco G.’s opinion

To round out the general opinion, I asked my dear neighbor to try it out, and here are his impressions:
“The Can-Am Commander impresses right from the start with its lively power. The throttle response is almost instantaneous, to the point where this vigor sometimes becomes a flaw. When climbing a rocky slope, for example, the jolts caused my foot to bounce off the pedal. The passenger felt every sudden surge of power… This behavior can be surprising in more technical sections.
Visibility is excellent when driving forward, but becomes almost non-existent when backing up. This complicates maneuvers in tight spaces or dense forests. Acoustically, we can’t forget that this is a side-by-side vehicle. The engine is very loud and takes up a lot of space in the cabin.”
High-performance, comfortable suspension
“Fortunately,” continues Marco, “the suspension balances out the experience. It works extremely well, absorbing shocks with aplomb and maintaining remarkable stability on rough terrain. The cabin stands out for its generous space, facilitating movement and offering real comfort to occupants. The numerous practical storage compartments add to the vehicle’s versatility. They make it easy to carry all the equipment you need for a full day on the trail.“
”The handling is really good. The Commander remains stable, precise, and reassuring, whether on fast sections or in the more winding parts of the trails. However, there is one significant negative point regarding the seat belt. According to my wife Josée, the belt is positioned too high in relation to the seat, to the point where it rubs against the neck. This becomes uncomfortable on long trips.”
“The seats, both for the driver and passenger, are very comfortable, but there is another issue. In my opinion, the driver’s seat doesn’t recline far enough. For someone who is about 5’6”, like me, the seat was already pushed back as far as it would go… and I would have liked a few more inches.”
“In summary, the 2025 Can-Am Commander XT-P 1000R offers a very solid combination of power, comfort, and handling. It suffers from a few ergonomic and practical irritants that could be adjusted to make the experience even more enjoyable and accessible to all sizes.”

Areas for improvement
Despite its many qualities, the Commander XT-P has a few shortcomings that detract from the overall experience:
1. Reduced visibility to the front and especially to the rear:
The massive silhouette and side/rear protective elements limit the viewing angles. This is particularly true when maneuvering at low speeds and reversing. Rear visibility is often insufficient to accurately judge low obstacles or uneven terrain. This means you have to rely more on the mirrors or get out of the vehicle to check. A clearer field of vision or a rearview camera would greatly improve maneuverability in tight spaces.
2. Noisy interior:
The noise level inside the cabin is high, especially at cruising speed and when the engine is under heavy load. This reduces comfort on long journeys. Improved insulation between the engine and the cabin and work on reducing engine and transmission noise would be welcome improvements.
3. Interior finishes could be improved:
Some of the assembly and materials are still a little too “utilitarian” and dull for the XT-P version. An extra effort in terms of perceived quality would take the Commander from a utility vehicle to a truly premium product.
4. The basic 7.6-inch digital screen:
In the entry-level versions (DPS, XT), the screen is appropriate for the level of accessories and price. However, for the XT-P version and its $31,000 price tag, we would expect much better. We would even expect to get the 10.25-inch touchscreen to match the premium feel of this version.
Finally, here’s what you need to remember:

The 2025 Can-Am Commander XT-P 1000R is a compelling, rugged, high-performance side-by-side designed for those who want a versatile vehicle. Capable of handling demanding conditions, its suspension and braking inspire confidence.

The engine offers smooth and responsive performance. The main reservations concern acoustic comfort and visibility. These are areas where technical attention would significantly improve the experience. All in all, it’s an excellent companion for those who prioritize durability and performance. Provided you are willing to accept a few compromises in comfort to get this part-time utility versatility.
