Who would have thought in 2008, when the very first edition of the three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle was released, that it would be such a resounding success 16 years later. You only have to look at the incredible number of BRP vehicles on the streets of Quebec on sunny days to see its popularity. The company has adapted over the years to improve its product, but above all to meet the needs of its customers and increase its market share. The number of models on offer means there’s something for everyone, both in terms of money and options. The addition of the Ryker category a few years ago clearly demonstrates the company’s desire to reach all types of wallet.
Our first test vehicle in a series of three, direct from BRP, is the Spyder F3, Limited Special Series. Three categories exist at BRP: the entry-level Ryker, with less technology but more affordability; the Spyder, which is the luxury sport; and the RT, considered the ultimate fully-equipped two-seater.
The Spyder F3 Limited Special Series is well equipped.
I’d compare our test vehicle to a Cadillac CT5, a fully-equipped vehicle with state-of-the-art performance and, above all, luxury. The Special Series limited edition comes in a single color, Cognac Metallic, with Carbon Black parts and trim.
Two major new features have been added for the 2024 edition: a new, more interactive screen for the driver, and new, much more powerful LED lights.
BRP is known to use and often interchange parts found in other market segments, such as snowmobiles, personal watercraft and others. The new, large 10.25-inch screen introduced this year in the Spyder range made its debut last year in the snowmobile world. The new touchscreen offers a wealth of entertainment, mapping and driving information. The display is crystal-clear for both day and night driving. It offers Bluetooth connectivity with your smartphone, as well as wired connectivity for recharging your device. New for the on-road versions, the screen is now compatible with Apple CarPlay. But to make it work, you’ll absolutely need a communication system installed on your helmet and connected to your vehicle. Otherwise, Apple CarPlay won’t work.
The other addition for 2024 was, according to several reviewers, a very important safety necessity. New, high-powered LED headlights are finally appearing across the Spyder range for the new season.
Those with a keen eye will notice a huge similarity with the headlights introduced last season in the snowmobile world.
Standard equipment includes the BRP audio premium high-performance audio system with six speakers, including USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Added to this are mirrors integrated into the front grille, very comfortable embossed seats, identified Limited, and a removable driver’s backrest. There are also rigid side compartments with security locks, a rear trunk that doubles as a passenger backrest, and much more. In addition, this version is equipped with self-levelling air suspension and the legendary, high-performance Brembo braking system.
The Rotax 1330 ACE, a three-cylinder in-line engine with liquid cooling and direct fuel injection, has been a sure bet for several seasons now. It delivers 115 hp at 7250 rpm, with 96 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. And, as in the past, we continue with the semi-automatic six-speed transmission with reverse gear.
Driving impressions
My test drive lasted around four weeks, during which I added over 1,300 km to the odometer. During this period, I encountered a wide range of weather conditions and drove on a variety of roads, from city to freeway to country lanes.
The first word that comes to mind is comfort. The seat is soft and very comfortable. This version is fitted with the same footrests as the RT versions and is very ergonomic. The windscreen is a nice height, offering protection from the wind without obstructing the view, at least for someone of my size, at around 5’10”. A special mention for the backrest introduced for the rider, which allows us a few pleasant moments of relaxation. It can be used with a passenger, but if the latter is a little more corpulent, it would be preferable to remove it. Worthy of mention for added comfort, the vehicle is equipped with heated grips for the rider and passenger – we actually tested them with my partner on a rather chilly evening, and their five-position adjustment adds a nice touch of comfort.
Self-leveling air suspension excels in virtually all conditions. No adjustment worries, whether you’re riding with two people and lots of luggage or alone. The compressor adjusts the height of the vehicle to remain within the correct operating range. However, as on previous versions, the front shock absorbers lack a little firmness. There’s a slight wobble phenomenon when changing lanes, especially on a road with a lot of rollers. Simply hold the handles more firmly for a smoother transition.
Another point for improvement, as was also the case on previous versions, is the small vibration in the running boards that occurs when the gas pedal is released. It occurs at constant speed when you fall between acceleration and compression. According to a good mechanic friend of mine, this is due to the vibration of the belt.
The vehicle is highly refined and offers excellent protection against the wind. The only downside is that at higher speeds, there’s a little turbulence in the helmet caused by wind deflection. But this is not a major factor in your choice of vehicle. And it’s quite possible that it won’t be noticeable at all, depending on your size.
The power of the 1330 cm3 three-cylinder engine is perfectly suited to this type of vehicle. Full-power acceleration is pleasant, and fuel consumption is respectable. The six-speed semi-automatic transmission continues to offer a little knock when shifting into first gear, but is remarkably smooth for the remaining five gears.
Our opinion on the Spyder F3 Limited Special Edition
If you’re a lover of luxury and comfort, and enjoy long two-up rides and long trips, this version is definitely a choice to consider when making your next purchase, mainly because of its very comfortable suspension, its large load spaces and the very interesting interaction of the new 10.25-inch screen, which make it a very user-friendly vehicle.
Many thanks to BRP Can-Am On Road for the great collaboration we had this season.
We’ll be testing two more Spyder and Ryker models for you over the summer!
Have a great season!
