5th position- Ex-Aquo: Yamaha Grizzly 700 and Suzuki King Quad 750
We won’t be impressed by the innovation of these two models, which are offered without much change year after year with new colors or special editions of equipment. Both models feature a large single-cylinder engine, four-wheel independent suspension and power steering. However, the buyer gets peace of mind and many years of trouble-free use.
4th place: Can Am Outlander 700
The Can Am Outlander 500 and 700 are already on the market for their third year. The manufacturer took the gamble of offering a large single-cylinder engine to replace a 570cc V2 that was unique in the segment. This engine makes you forget all about the old mill. The ride comfort provided by the four-wheel independent suspension is very good, both on the single-seater model and the two-seater MAX. The vehicle’s imposing bodywork protects occupants from mud splashes and the heat of the engine. Because of its good overall performance, this model falls a little into the large-displacement category.
3rd place: CFMOTO CFORCE 800 and 1000
The CFORCE 800 and 1000 undergo a major overhaul this year. Basically, the qualities of the previous generation have been improved, and the worst faults corrected. The big CFORCEs are only available in a two-seater version, and with the 1000 you can opt for the well-equipped Overland version. Comfort is top-notch, thanks to the comfortable seat and good suspension work. Also, the revised engines are in the top range in terms of performance: 84 HP for the 1000 cc and 70 HP for the 800 cc). Also, the finishing and assembly details of the body panels can now be compared with the best.
2nd place: Polaris Sportsman 850
The Polaris Sportsman 850 is a truly mature vehicle. The homogeneity of its mechanics means that everything works like a symphony when you drive it. The 850cc parallel-twin engine pushes 78 hp through a well-calibrated transmission. Suspension comfort lives up to its reputation with solid, precise handling. Polaris offers several levels of equipment to enhance the vehicle’s refinement and driving pleasure.
However, with Can Am’s remarkable upgrade of its big Outlander, Polaris will have its work cut out to keep up.
1st position: Can AM Outlander 850 and 1000
Can Am has scored a major coup this year with its completely overhauled large-displacement Outlanders. The outgoing Outlander was already far from outdated, but the new one really raises the bar. The manufacturer has followed a recipe similar to that used to develop the Outlander 700: new chassis, new engines, new bodywork (which retains a family resemblance with the smaller 700), etc.
Right from the start, the engines are the most powerful in the segment, having even surpassed the 100 hp mark to reach 101 hp. But you still need to be able to transfer all that power to the ground efficiently. First of all, the new, stiffer G3 frame is anchored by an independent double-wishbone suspension at all four wheels. Steering is, of course, assisted by three levels of adjustment. In terms of enclosed storage space, the front and rear luggage racks feature storage compartments. Also, the new engine-covering side panels completely cut the heat on the rider’s calves, a defect that afflicted the previous generation. In short, superior overall performance, impeccable driving precision and top-notch comfort put it right at the top of this list.
