Table des matières

Introduction

This is KTM’s big sport tourer. A “long-distance monster” as the Austrian brand likes to call it. With its performance pedigree, razor-sharp handling and array of technologies, it’s easy to see why this is one of KTM’s flagship models. Discover the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT 2024 with us.

Design and finish

As soon as you set eyes on the Super Duke GT, you can’t help but notice its aggressive, distinctive lines. It’s instantly recognizable as the work of Kiska Design, which has been with the manufacturer for several years now. A very successful color combination, with the classic touch of bright orange associated with the brand. Even at a standstill, the bike looks like it’s on the move, with its dynamic looks and exhilarating lines.

The numerous mechanical components are perfectly integrated, and the quality of finish is of the highest caliber. Unfortunately, it no longer comes standard with panniers as in previous years… possibly to keep the retail price down. This aspect detracts from its ability to cover thousands of kilometers. On the other hand, it is undeniably ”Ready-to-Race”, as KTM claims with its top-level performance.

Ergonomics

Taking your place on the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT, you’ll notice a position that’s just sporty enough. But it’s also comfortable enough for the long haul. The handlebars can be adjusted to four positions using the stem clamps. Brake and clutch levers are also adjustable. As a bonus, even the rear brake and gear selector controls are adjustable. Truly, everything is ready to adapt to your body type and preference. The attention to detail is easily visible on the bike, and we love it!

KTM TECH PACK option

Our test model is equipped with the optional TECH PACK. For an additional cost of just over a thousand dollars, this package includes Track Mode. This means you can benefit from additional options, all of which can be adjusted on-screen:

  • Quickshifter for split-second gear changes without using the clutch.
  • Gradual skid control in 9 positions.
  • Hill-start assist (brake locks automatically).
  • Complete disengagement of the anti-wheelie module to lift the front wheel.
  • Highly efficientlaunch control
  • And even more…

In short, these are really cool options to have to make the bike more playful, and they’re worth every penny.

The instrumentation panel

At the center of the cockpit is a 7” TFT color display. It’s easy to navigate, thanks to the buttons on the handlebars. The latter allows a multitude of settings. Whether it’s the riding mode, suspension settings, basic info, heated grips, etc., everything goes through the screen. The screen is simple, minimalist and perfectly illustrated. What’s more, the display’s excellent work makes it easy to understand the adjustments with evolving images. For example, you can see the bike with one or two passengers and/or suitcases to illustrate suspension preload.

Mechanics

Giving life to this big tourer is a gargantuan 1301 cm3 V-twin engine. And no, it’s not 1290 cm3… possibly to maintain consistency with the brand’s other models/brands. Now that we’ve finished digressing, let’s get down to business.

The German-built LC8 engine develops an insane 175 hp (129 kW). Torque is present at all engine speeds, peaking at 104 lb*ft (141 N*m). These figures speak for themselves when you consider the weight of just 460 lb (209 kg). The use of alloys, composites and advanced engineering make these technical feats possible.

Fully adjustable electronic suspension

The performance of the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT is further enhanced by the use of semi-active WP electronic suspension. Settings can be preset in three modes (Sport, Comfort, Street). What’s more, preload is taken into account by indicating whether you’re riding alone, accompanied or with luggage. In this way, the computer modulates shock absorber adjustments. What’s more, in real time, the suspension is readjusted using accelerometers for optimum driving precision.

Brakes and wheels

The wheels are also state-of-the-art. With the help of computer-aided design, weight has been reduced to a minimum. As a result, inertia is at its lowest for enhanced handling. Speaking of handling, we’ve also added a steering damper to limit steering on rough roads.

The original tires are Continental ContiSportAttack 4. This tire was developed in partnership with KTM to match the needs and parameters of the Super Duke GT as closely as possible. They offer impeccable grip when the decision is made to take corners at high speed.

Finally, nothing has been left to chance with a set of brakes supplied by Brembo. Two 320 mm discs at the front, pinched by four-piston calipers. At the rear, a 240 mm disc with a two-piston caliper. ABS comes as standard, of course, and has been calibrated to be sporty enough to feel the road. It’s even possible to deactivate the rear ABS for skidding like a superbiker.

Driving impressions

What does it feel like to ride the Super Duke GT? It’s a bike that combines performance and long-distance comfort. You get the best of both worlds, with a unique riding experience. With the big 1301 cm3 V-Twin engine, power is impressive, with immediate throttle response. Driving modes make a real difference, allowing you to modulate the engine’s desired response.

The tubular aluminum chassis, designed for sportiness, is light and rigid. This makes for exceptional handling in corners. The bike’s geometry and riding position allow for precise cornering and a feeling of confidence. The seats are well padded and supportive… Even after several hours on the road, there’s no pain in the buttocks.

Perfectly integrated technologies

The technological aspect of the bike gives it many advantages. Electronic support systems, such as ABS, traction control and several riding modes, enable performance to be adjusted efficiently. All these electronic devices enhance safety and, above all, do not interfere with riding pleasure. KTM is to be congratulated for integrating so many technologies without compromising the beast’s behavior.

What really impresses is the KTM Super Duke GT’s ability to alternate between sporty performance on the track. The “Ready-to-Race” aspect is felt at every turn. Despite this, the bike offers appreciable comfort over long distances, making it extremely versatile. Whether you’re looking for a fast-paced ride or a longroad trip, this is a motorcycle that delivers the thrills without sacrificing comfort. It’s a modern motorcycle with a perfect blend of performance, technology and riding pleasure.

Highlights

  • Powerful, characterful mechanics.
  • Sporty riding precision and performance without paying the bill every year.
  • On-board technologies that really take riding to another level.
  • Ideal mount for 20,000 km or more per season.

Areas for improvement

  • A big twin-cylinder engine inevitably leads to vibrations at certain engine speeds. You often have to play with the gears to limit this vibration.
  • The engine doesn’t like very low revs. You feel a certain hesitation. You simply have to adjust your driving style and select the right transmission ratio.
  • The 2024 version no longer comes with suitcases, so you’ll have to pay a little more when you buy it. We all agree that this is a necessity for a long-distance touring bike.

Conclusion

A true two-wheeled missile, the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT 2024 impresses with its sporty performance and comfort. Even with a passenger, who loved the rhythmicride. Not only does this bike look sporty, it’s also a pleasure to ride. All that remains is to remain civilized and avoid speeding tickets. That’s the real challenge with a bike like this!
