The Ungava is a jacket that was designed to be very warm even with a low level of activity. If you look at the technical specifications of the CKX Ungava jacket, you’ll see that the 20g Promaloft insulation on the torso and 170g on the sleeves, combined with a 10K/10k membrane, make for a warm garment. What is a 10K/10k membrane? It is a membrane that has a waterproofness of 10 000 mm, a wind resistance of 10 000 mm and a breathability of 10 000 mm.
The fabric chosen for the CKX Ungava coat is a Taslan 100% Nylon DVR, which guarantees a great resistance to abrasion and tears. Also, the fabric keeps all its flexibility in cold weather. The cut of the CKX Ungava jacket is short and has all the features to keep air and snow out: storm skirt at the bottom of the jacket, cuff with thumbhole to keep it in place, water and windproof Aquaguard zippers. Finally, you’ll have two pockets: a large mesh one on the left chest and a hidden one on the left sleeve end.
The CKX Ungava jacket also innovates on the safety side. First, with the reflective prints on the coat and second, with the possibility to light a cross LED bar in the back. A long, thin window is provided for a LED strip (optional from Kimpex) that will be powered by an auxiliary power supply in your pocket. Knowing that you are not too visible on a trail at night, especially from the back, this is original and well thought out.
In use, there is no denying that the CKX Ungava coat is warm. Very warm. If you’re working on unloading a snowmobile, you’ll quickly feel the heat rising, but you won’t be sweating in the coat because it breathes well. Also, the coat is free of air infiltration and allows for a good range of motion.
However, it is a bit short on the trunk and if you don’t have high bib overalls, you will feel cold air in your lower back. If you’re a trail rider, you’ll appreciate it even in the coldest weather. In closing, is the LED gadget worth it? Yes, you have to see it in action at night to understand its relevance.
