Introduction

For 2026, manufacturers are continuing this powerful momentum. New features include redesigned models and the addition of new options. These innovations demonstrate the dynamism of the sector and are sure to attract the attention of enthusiasts.

The Passion Motoneige team offers you an overview of the main trends and new off-road features for this new season.

Ski-Doo 2026, the mountain reinvented

Let’s start with the Valcourt-based manufacturer, which is making a big splash this year. At first glance, the mountain snowmobile segment doesn’t offer a new model, but it’s almost as good. The Canadian manufacturer is focusing on a series of innovations aimed at making its machines lighter, increasing their maneuverability, and improving the overall experience.

An impressive weight loss

The Summit X in action!

The most striking change is undoubtedly the weight reduction applied to the entire range. The Summit X loses up to 14 pounds, the Expert 8 pounds, and the Freeride about 6 pounds, depending on the version. This is a considerable feat for snowmobiles that are already highly optimized! It translates into greater agility and less effort required to ride.

This lightness is achieved thanks to a redesigned tunnel that is shorter and narrower. The thickness has also been reduced from 1.8 mm to 1.6 mm. The frame members have also been refined, while maintaining rigidity thanks to a revised geometry. The length of the radiator has also been reduced on some models, contributing not only to weight reduction but also to limiting ice buildup. The result is smoother handling and better flotation in deep snow.

A ski stance of only 32 inches

New 32-inch ski stance.

Another major new feature is the introduction of a reduced ski stance of only 32 inches, available on the Summit Expert. This narrower ski stance improves connection with the slope and facilitates maneuvering on steep terrain.

Added to this is the Twin Link system: a double-arm steering system that increases the steering angle by 30%. This combination provides increased precision, better penetration in already-trodden snow, and significantly reduces bump steer. Sidehill traction is also improved, as balance is achieved at a lower angle. This keeps a larger surface area of the track in contact with the snow. Less effort is required to tilt the machine, resulting in greater control and more responsive handling overall.

The Summit X reigns supreme in terms of lightness

The 2026 Summit X features unique elements that make it the benchmark in the range. Its tMotion-X rear suspension has been redesigned to shed an additional two pounds while offering two inches more travel than the competition. The spring and shock calibrations have also been adjusted for more dynamism and “pop.” In other words, the snowmobile is even more playful and lightweight for jumping.

Notable details include a new forged aluminum upper suspension arm, contributing to the lightness and refined finish. In addition, there is an ultra-lightweight PowderMax track with 3-inch lugs, exclusive to the 154-inch versions. The latter reduces inertia and improves responsiveness, particularly during acceleration and aerial manoeuvres such as re-entries and jumps.

The Backcountry remains an excellent choice as a hybrid model

The Ski-Doo Backcountry is still one of the favorite hybrid snowmobiles.

If you’re not exclusively mountain-oriented, the versatile Backcountry remains an excellent option. Since last year, it is now available with the 180-horsepower 850 Turbo R engine. In addition, there are two ski widths to choose from (39 or 43 inches). In short, it all depends on the balance you’re looking for between trail performance and off-trail agility. The choice is yours!

Polaris

The flamboyant Polaris 9R RMK KHAOS Chris Burandt Edition

For 2026, Polaris’ new mountain model comes in the form of a limited edition Chris Burandt. Available exclusively through the SnowCheck program, it features unique colors (navy blue, orange, and chrome) and practical standard accessories. However, there are many more new features with hybrid snowmobiles… There will be more on that below.

2026 off-road snowmobiles
Redesigned front bumper

The front bumper has been completely redesigned to effectively protect the fairing and body pan, areas that are particularly exposed when riding off-trail. Its design perfectly matches the lines of the chassis while limiting snow accumulation, which helps keep weight optimized.

New handlebar bag

A compact handlebar bag has been added to the included equipment. Securely attached but removable in seconds, it allows you to easily carry essential items such as gloves, goggles, or your phone without interfering with aggressive mountain riding.

Good news: these accessories will also be available in the Polaris catalog for next season.

Switchback Assault – 43-inch and 39-inch ski widths

For those who enjoy riding on trails as much as in powder, the very popular Switchback Assault is still available. New this year: it will now be available in two different ski widths. First, 43 inches, as we knew it before. This is the Race version, which is still just as dynamic on trails.

Then there’s the Escape version, which features a new suspension geometry with a 39-inch track width. This new version offers additional performance in off-trail situations. Much more playful and agile in deep snow, the Assault is now easier to tilt. Sure, you lose some performance on the trails, but nothing too serious. Snowmobilers will simply have to choose the one that suits them best.

To conclude with Polaris, a big new feature: the Voyageur 155

A brand new 2026 model for Polaris. The Voyageur 155.

For 2026, Polaris is launching the all-new 650 Voyageur 155. This model fills the gap between the Switchback Assault and the Polaris Titan. The goal is clear: to offer a utility snowmobile that is more agile and comfortable than a 20-inch wide track machine.

The Patriot 650 engine powers the range. Responsive, it offers impressive performance at low and medium speeds, while consuming less fuel than the 850. Depending on the version, the suspension features IFP or FOX QS3 shocks, which are well known for their efficiency and ease of adjustment.

Versatility in action

The different versions include a trailer hitch, side racks for cargo space, and the Lock&Ride system to maximize versatility.

On trails, the 155-inch track remains surprisingly maneuverable thanks to a geometry inspired by the Titan but narrower, making it easier to turn.

On the utility side, the towing capacity reaches 450 lb and the cargo space 50 lb, enough to accomplish most common tasks. Off-trail, the flotation is impressive, especially with the 2-inch track, allowing you to tackle more technical terrain.

The 2026 Polaris 650 Voyageur 155 succeeds in its goal of being a truly versatile snowmobile. It doesn’t replace a Titan at work or compete with an RMK in the mountains. The Voyageur stands out for its ability to offer a balanced compromise between trail fun, utility, and off-trail adventure.

In short, Polaris offers a varied and comprehensive range in 2026, capable of meeting the expectations of all types of riders, from novices to extreme power enthusiasts.

LYNX

2026 off-road snowmobiles
The dynamics of the 2026 LYNX Shredder have definitely changed for the better.

At first glance, the 2026 LYNX Shredder retains the same aggressive design. However, numerous technical improvements have transformed its dynamics on the mountain. The new extra-short, narrower tunnel facilitates snow evacuation and reduces weight by up to 11 lbs, depending on the configuration. A more robust rear bumper is now standard, addressing a previous weakness. In terms of ergonomics, the footrests have been raised by 20 mm, the handlebar block lowered by 90 mm, and the seat made more compact. This brings the rider closer to the snowmobile for greater control on slopes and during technical manoeuvres.

Under the hood is the Rotax 850 E-TEC Turbo R engine. It delivers 180 horsepower with power maintained up to 8,000 feet of altitude, a major asset for the Rockies.

The suspension has also been upgraded: at the front, the new LFS-DS and its Twin Link system offer 40% tighter steering, making sidehill riding easier. Narrower Blade DSS skis further improve manoeuvrability. At the rear, the PPS3-DS suspension revises the angle of attack and calibration for faster flotation. The result is a Shredder that is more precise, balanced, and formidably effective in the mountains. Last but not least, the 10.25-inch touchscreen now includes offline GPS, ideal for navigation in remote areas.

Brutale RE: Completely redesigned for 2026:

The LYNX Brutale RE returns transformed for the new year. Now on the Radien2 platform, it features a more aggressive style and a streamlined cockpit designed for standing riding. On the technical side, it has new narrower running boards and an ingenious fold-down snow guard. This allows for better snow evacuation off-piste while optimizing cooling on the trail.

KYB suspension and shock absorbers effectively absorb bumps and jumps, offering reassuring rigidity and precise handling. Blade DS+ skis provide solid grip in both deep snow and on the trail. With its weight, size, and price tag of over $20,000, the Brutale RE is not for beginners. It is a radical hybrid snowmobile, designed for 70% off-trail use. It shines with its robustness and unique character.

Arctic Cat

2025 M858 Alpha One model shown

When we visited SnowShoot, Arctic Cat’s future was uncertain, with the company up for sale… Fortunately, in the meantime, the company has found a buyer and is continuing its activities. This is excellent news for ensuring continued competition among manufacturers.

M858 Alpha One

Last year, we finally got a large-displacement 2-stroke engine for its new Catalyst platform. The 858 engine fully showcases the capabilities of the mountain models. Well integrated into the new Catalyst chassis, power is up 11% compared to the old engine, bringing it to around 180 horsepower. That’s all the power needed to effectively push even the most seasoned riders to the top. During our tests, this engine seemed to lack refinement at low revs. Adjustments have been made in the meantime, and the result will surely be convincing this season.

Photo 20 – grande taille
The M858 Alpha One in action

Arctic Cat’s mountain models with the Catalyst chassis offer centralized weight distribution. In addition, the rider is positioned right in the center of the action. When you sit on this snowmobile, you immediately notice its compact size… It’s a bit like riding a machine that’s three-quarters of the usual size. Its ergonomics are particularly well thought out, with a slimline fuel tank and narrow seat that make it easier to move around during technical maneuvers. In addition, the reduced width of the fairing offers excellent visibility while minimizing drag in the snow.

Two other versions of the M858: HCR and HCX

For 2026, we are also getting two additional versions of the M858: the HCX and HCR. In both cases, the rear geometry features two rails, like “standard” snowmobiles. As we know, the center rail geometry (Alpha One) does not only have advantages. In certain situations, such as with more compacted snow, the two-rail configuration is often preferred. Now, we can choose with the manufacturer what suits us best depending on our terrain.

Arctic Cat hybrid models: the RIOT.

The Arctic Cat Riot is one of the favourites in the crossover segment.

One of Arctic Cat’s most popular models is back for 2026. The RIOT comes with a choice of three engines: 858, 600, or 400. The larger engines are on the Catalyst platform. Providing an excellent compromise between trails and powder, the RIOT is very playful in all situations.

The Blast family, now with 400 cm³.

Finally, for beginners and younger riders, the Blast M400 and Riot 400 are also part of the 2026 season lineup. With this more aggressively priced offering, the American manufacturer is ensuring the next generation of riders. As we know, it’s always important to attract new enthusiasts to ensure the continued popularity of snowmobiling.

Conclusion

2026 has been a quieter year for some manufacturers. Nevertheless, there are some interesting changes, expanded versions, and additional versatile models. In addition, Arctic Cat has managed to get back on its feet to ensure the future of snowmobiling. This is excellent news for a 2026 season that we hope will be exceptional. Have a great season, everyone!
