Style and ergonomics

The Switchback’s ergonomics have been carefully thought out to provide optimum rider comfort, even on long outings. The riding position is high and very natural. The seat is both well-padded and firm enough to offer good support without sacrificing comfort. Controls are accessible and intuitive, making it easy for even less experienced riders to get the hang of.

Patriot BOOST engine!

The 2026 Polaris BOOST Switchback Assault is equipped with the Patriot 850 turbocharged engine. This innovative engine offers impressive power. And plenty of torque to tackle all types of terrain with disconcerting ease. The ride is smooth and highly responsive at the same time. Particularly in situations where the snowmobile is pushed to its limits. The engine gives the impression of never running out of steam and always wanting more. As a bonus, the turbo system adjusts pressure according to altitude. This enables the engine to maintain constant power even at high altitudes.

Power delivery is linear. Even in the most demanding conditions, the engine responds immediately with lively acceleration. Thanks to the turbo, the snowmobile can reach impressive speeds! It delivers a maximum output of 180 hp (unofficial). Allowing the Switchback Assault to rival the best snowmobiles on the market. Acceleration is brutal when required, but the engine can also be smooth and docile in more leisurely conditions.

New Escape front suspension

Suspension is one of the strong points of this model. They ensure its position of choice in the crossover segment. The 2026 Polaris BOOST Switchback Assault benefits from a completely new configuration. The Escape has adjustable ski spacing from 39“ to 41”. We already knew about the 43” suspension width, which is still available and is now called the Race.

The narrower ski width spacing is clearly visible on the Escape.

This means you can opt for the Escape configuration, which focuses more on off-piste skiing. This limits the effort required to swing and tilt the snowmobile. Or the more agile Race for trails. The choice is yours!

The IGX 146 rear suspension does an excellent job. And let’s not forget the new option of a colored seat for a personalized touch.

At the rear, we benefit from the IGX 146 suspension geometry, which has proven its worth over several seasons. A perfect compromise between flotation and trail agility, it’s ideal for a hybrid snowmobile. With its semi-coupled sled, the snowmobile adopts a very playful handling with frequent ski lifts. It is designed to tackle both beaten trails and steep slopes. This system is particularly effective in maintaining good traction on hard or soft snow. At the same time, it provides excellent cushioning when tackling uneven terrain. The snowmobile also handles impact very well when jumping, offering good shock absorption.

Walker Evans Velocity shock absorbers

Walker Evans Velocity shock absorbers come as standard for enhanced stability and configurable comfort. In fact, the suspension settings can be adjusted according to the driver’s preferences. Whether it’s for maximum stiffness on the trail for hyper-aggressive riding. Or for greater suppleness and comfort. This modularity is a real advantage when it comes to adapting to all kinds of terrain and snow conditions. All in all, the suspensions offer an excellent compromise between performance and comfort. Allowing you to cover long distances without excessive fatigue.

Driving impressions

Driving the 2026 Polaris BOOST Switchback Assault is a truly exhilarating experience. No matter what the terrain. From the very first kilometers, you can feel the fluidity of the ride, even in difficult conditions. The snowmobile is agile, responsive and predictable. These are major assets when you’re going fast. The Matryx chassis is rigid, but not to the point of compromising comfort. It allows the snowmobile to remain stable while offering precise handling.

On hard snow, it behaves like a real monster with its BOOST engine. Also due to its optimal traction with 2“ studs on the 146” track of our test model. Acceleration is crisp and the bite of the skis is impeccable. Of course, it can’t compete with a pure trail model. On the other hand, it leads the way in this segment of the hybrid market. When riding on hard-packed snow, the machine literally seems to “stick” to the ground. With well-balanced power and stability that inspire confidence. The work of the turbo engine is also remarkable. It intervenes progressively, providing extra power at just the right moment, before becoming brutal at high revs.

Excellent ground feel with this snowmobile.

How does it behave when cornering?

When it comes to cornering, the snowmobile is both precise and responsive. Thanks to the high-quality shock absorbers and good weight distribution, the turns are tight. There’s no major loss of stability, as long as you keep in mind the machine’s all-purpose vocation. Whether on trails or more technical backcountry sections, it always performs successfully.

For those who like to ride more complex terrain in deep snow, it adapts well to these conditions. It will even take some very imposing obstacles to stop it in its tracks. Thanks to its powerful engine and robust suspension, it performs well in deep snow conditions. Of course, the track with 2” studs is recommended for this purpose. For trail use, opt for the 3 other versions (1.35, 1.5 or 1.6” studs).

Highlights

  • The Patriot BOOST engine is this model’s main asset. The turbocharger provides instant power in all situations.
  • The arrival of the narrown Escape front suspension increases the range of choices for driving optimized to your preferences.
  • Top-of-the-range front and rear shock absorbers offer exceptional comfort and precise control.
  • The model’s versatility. Whether on groomed trails, in the backcountry or in deep snow… the Switchback Assault performs well on all terrains.

Areas for improvement

  • Versatility works against it… When you perform well everywhere, you don’t excel anywhere at the same time. This is true of all hybrids!
  • A retail price that continues to climb with all its innovations and high-end features. Although the quality partly justifies the price, this can be a deterrent for snowmobilers on a budget.
  • Fuel consumption is relatively high, as is oil consumption with such high performance. Although fuel consumption is reasonable for a snowmobile of this power, it remains higher than that of non-turbo models. If you’re going on long tours, you’ll need to plan your refuelling more carefully.

Admittedly, its price may be discouraging, but this is more than compensated for by its staggering performance. It’s ideal for those looking for a machine capable of tackling anything. No wonder it’s a benchmark in its class!
