BRP has followed a similar strategy with the Ryker range, as they have with several other products. They offer vehicles that capture the essence of high-end Spyder models while being more accessible. This approach gives a wider range of consumers access to many of the innovations and, above all, the reputation of BRP vehicles, without having to invest in the more expensive models. By introducing the slightly less-equipped Ryker version, BRP can satisfy those looking for the brand’s quality and reliability without the extra features that characterize the Spyder models. It’s a clever way of democratizing access to their vehicles while maintaining a level of quality that continues to seduce 3-wheel motorcycle enthusiasts.
The origin of this trend is undoubtedly the arrival of the 900 ACE engine on the snowmobile market in 2014. Since then, we’ve seen the emergence of the Spark marine motorcycle, with a much lower and more affordable price tag, and the same has been true of Can Am’s road bikes, where we’ve introduced the Ryker line-up, which is less expensive and more affordable than the traditional spider division. And for many, this category serves as a springboard to get their feet wet in the sport and then make the leap to a more expensive vehicle. While others stay with the Ryker line up, which admittedly offers a very sporty and fun spirit, and which can also be driven for longer distances like the Spider line.
The ACE 900 engine: efficient and reliable
The introduction of the ACE 900 engine to BRP snowmobiles in 2014 marked a decisive turning point in their strategy of diversification and accessibility. This engine has not only made it possible to offer acceptable performance, but above all with excellent reliability and remarkable fuel economy. The example of the Spark watercraft is revealing: BRP was able to capture the attention of a new clientele with a fun, lightweight product, and above all, at a much more accessible price than their traditional Sea-Doo models. Similarly, the introduction of the Ryker range has enabled BRP to reach a wider audience in the three-wheeled market, offering a more affordable alternative to the Spyder models, while retaining a sporty, dynamic character. For many enthusiasts, these entry-level ranges such as the Spark or Ryker serve as a gateway into BRP’s world of motorsports.
As you probably already know, Ryker models have a variable transmission, i.e. two pulleys with a belt that operates in a very similar way to a snowmobile. This makes riding much easier for beginners, who don’t have to worry about shifting gears, and the performance is right on target.
The performance of the 900 Ace is well suited to this vehicle, offering good acceleration and fuel economy. The Rallye model is fitted with HPG shock absorbers at the front, giving it great cornering stability. What’s more, the red knobs on the front of the Ryker make for easy adjustment. The more off-road tires fitted to our test vehicle offer good grip on gravel or dirt roads. The extra grip adds to the safety factor on these types of terrain.
It’s impossible not to mention the Ryker Rally’s standard Akrapovic muffler. Without being too loud, it offers a sportier sound that sets it apart from its Rally and Rally Sport siblings. Very pleasant!
Top-notch affordable versatility
That said, the Ryker line-up, while more affordable, is no less capable and versatile. It offers a different, sporty driving experience that rivals that of more expensive models. This strategy has not only broadened BRP’s customer base, it has also strengthened their market position by offering vehicles suited to different levels of experience and budget.
This version is distinguished by additional options to the Sport model, and features that make it ready for use on unpaved roads. Here’s what sets it apart:
1. Off-road tires: These tires are specially designed to offer better traction on a variety of terrains, from gravel and mud to unpaved roads. This makes the Ryker Rallye more versatile and capable of venturing off paved roads.
2. Akrapovic exhaust: The Akrapovic exhaust is a premium addition that not only enhances engine performance, but also the sound of the vehicle. It’s said to deliver a sportier sound and more power, while reducing weight compared with a standard exhaust. These features make the Ryker Rallye particularly suitable for those looking for a three-wheeled vehicle capable of going off the beaten track and a sportier ride.
3. Cruise control: Although very rudimentary, this does the job. A single button does all the work. Press one quickly to activate it, and then hold it a little longer to engage the regulation. If you want to increase speed or reduce it, you have to press it again quickly to deactivate it, and then repeat the process, or touch the brakes, as you should.
4. Hand guards: Hand guards offer extra protection for the driver’s hands, shielding them from debris, branches, and the natural elements encountered more frequently when driving off-road.
5. Rally mode: This mode offers more efficient traction control, better suited to conditions with less grip, such as dirt or gravel.
6. Reinforced silver wheels: Hyper silver-colored, these rims are more robust to cope with the unevenness and obstacles found on unpaved roads.
7. LED light: The Rally version features an auxiliary LED bar for added safety and night vision.
8. Additional protection: The Rally version is equipped with a robust front bumper that protects the front grille in the event of impact, and a large protective plate under the car.
9. Running boards: for better grip on bumpier roads, more aggressive, non-slip adjustable running boards are fitted.
10. KYB front shock absorber with external reservoir: KYB HPG front shock absorbers with 4-position compression reservoir and adjustable preload.
And much more: We finish it all off with Rally mudguards, Rally comfort seat, Rally handlebars and an air prefilter to limit unwanted intruders in your engine.
Ryker look and design philosophy
The Ryker’s look is unmistakably different from that of its Spyder siblings. The seat is a little lower, with a raised fuel tank, giving the impression of riding a larger vehicle. The front-to-rear handlebar adjustment allows us to ride in a variety of positions, from forward with our backs slightly bent forward, to backward in a more custom position. It’s relatively easy to find a good fit for a comfortable position. The bench is comfortable, even if it’s harder than we’re used to on Spyders.
On the braking front, you can feel the DNA of its more expensive sibling, with more than acceptable performance. The ABS system is highly efficient and keeps the car on its axis, even with one wheel on a different surface! And for those who didn’t know, the brake pedal is easily adjustable without any tools…
The Ryker alone in its self-created niche
The arrival of the Can-Am Ryker Rallye on the market has definitely opened the door to a new segment of drivers, attracted by a more accessible and versatile vehicle. With its adventure-oriented features, such as off-road tires and adjustable shocks, and its bolder look, the Ryker Rallye stands out from other models in the Can-Am line-up. This approach appeals not only to thrill-seekers, but also to those looking for a vehicle capable of handling various types of terrain while remaining easy to drive. It thus fits into a niche that combines the appeal of innovation, performance and adventure, while being suitable for novices and more experienced riders alike. In short, a vehicle that’s easy and fun to drive!
