As expected, Ski-Doo continues to expand its Gen 5 platform, with the last, but not least, models that were still on the Gen 4 platform making the leap for 2027. The Skandic and Tundra lineups will now feature the Gen 5 chassis, with a few adjustments for the new season.

For 2027, the Skandic models are also adopting the new platform. More sophisticated, more agile, and more technologically advanced, it radically transforms the driving experience. Visually, the change is just as striking: the silhouette gains in presence with a more massive and imposing design, particularly on the Skandic, which now has a much more robust and impressive look.

The new U-Motion rear suspension

Introduced last year on Expedition models, the U-Motion makes its debut and consigns the good old SC-5U to oblivion. This new suspension provides an additional 27 millimeters of travel, much more precise weight transfer control, and an additional 10 pounds of cargo capacity, for a total of 135 pounds. With the articulated rear section, it can be locked completely to the ground for better traction, or raised for better maneuverability on hard surfaces.

Ground contact is provided by the 20-inch CrossCut track, which is pre-studded for better control on icy surfaces.

More efficient lighting

One of the great improvements in the Gen 5 platform is definitely the lighting. The 2400-lumen LED lights provide 37% more brightness. This is a noticeable improvement that can greatly facilitate driving in the evening or even during work!

Less vibration

In terms of the engine, a fourth engine mount has been added to versions equipped with a 2-stroke engine. This reduces vibration and maintains better pulley alignment at all times to optimize belt life. This is a key factor in a work machine where the loads being pulled can put additional stress on the engine mounts.

Standard cargo box

Essential for a work vehicle, a 135-liter cargo box is available as standard! The largest on the market, you can compartmentalize it as you wish to store tools or personal belongings! Several LinQ options can be added.

Windshield and mirrors

The windshield is now in two parts. The upper part is more flexible, allowing it to withstand various impacts. It can be easily removed for replacement, among other things. The lower part of the windshield, which is more rigid, features new folding mirrors that can fold down in the event of an impact.

The rear passenger handles have been redesigned for 2027. Positioned further forward, they offer a 12.4-degree angle for easier grip. Ideal for long rides!

900 ACE engine

The SE version is only available with the 900 ACE engine. This three-cylinder engine is undoubtedly one of the most reliable on the market, with good fuel economy. It is important to note that the LE version offers a wider choice with the 600 EFI (20 inches), 600 ACE (20 inches), 600 RR (20 & 24 inches) and 900 ACE (20 & 24 inches) engines.

Front suspension…

No changes here, we’re sticking with the telescopic suspension that has proven itself in this segment for years. With low manufacturing costs, it remains a good choice for a utility snowmobile.

Honestly, this was my 24th Snow Shoot, and I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve ridden utility snowmobiles. It was a very enjoyable day where we took the time to test them, but also to chat with members of the BRP team about their vision for the utility segment. This is a segment that is not insignificant in terms of sales, especially in Quebec.

We rode a few miles on the trail, keeping in mind that most drivers of this type of vehicle use it more for work and off-trail riding. The lack of snow prevented us from testing it in very deep snow, but based on experience, we can still say that its performance will be among the best in this category. The flotation capacity is remarkable, with excellent reach provided by the 20-inch track combined with wide skis.

The 900 Ace engine is probably the best suited for this type of vehicle. Combined with the two-speed transmission, it allows the owner to pull heavy loads in first gear and drive on trails at higher speeds in second gear.

The cargo capacity is simply phenomenal. In addition to the 135 liters of space in the enormous rear trunk, there is also a smaller compartment under the passenger seat.

On trails, at reasonable cruising speeds, the Skandic performs relatively well. Of course, you can quickly reach the limit of the front telescopic suspension. When used a little more in its natural habitat, you quickly notice its impressive ability to handle rough terrain at low speeds. The idea of testing its load-pulling capacity crossed our minds, but it’s quite difficult to find all the equipment needed to conduct conclusive tests out there. However, we’re not worried about that. Perhaps we’ll eventually see a new front suspension. Only time will tell.

The ergonomics for the driver are comfortable, although the legs have to be spread further apart due to the wider chassis for the 20- and 24-inch tracks. However, you can stretch your feet forward to reduce the effect of the width. It should be noted that the tunnel is slightly bevelled to contribute to the comfort of the occupants.

As expected, the arrival of Gen 5 in this category brings a breath of fresh air to a segment that is too often overlooked. And what can we say about the quality of finish that is always present in BRP products? The 2027 Skandic SE is no exception.
