Since its sensational arrival in 2019, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 has carved out a place for itself in the hearts of trail enthusiasts. Robust, sober and efficient, it embodies a certain idea of adventure without fuss. For 2025, Yamaha has not sought to reinvent its winning formula, but rather to fine-tune its offering with a few well-considered novelties, in order to stay in the race against a competition that grows stronger with each passing year.

We were lucky enough to spend a few days riding it, on paved roads, gravel tracks and trails, to see what this new model has in the belly. Spoiler: it remains true to itself, and all the better for it.

What’s new in 2025

Don’t expect any major aesthetic or technical changes: the 2025 Ténéré 700 retains its sleek silhouette and competition-inspired rally look, with the unmistakable dual LED headlamp. Nevertheless, Yamaha has listened to its users and has come up with a few welcome adjustments.

First of all, the dashboard has evolved. Gone is the outdated monochrome LCD screen, replaced by a more legible, modern 5-inch TFT color instrument cluster, connected via the Yamaha MyRide application. You can now track your itinerary, check notifications and even adjust certain motorcycle parameters via your phone.

Another new feature is the arrival of three-mode ABS. In addition to the standard mode (ABS activated on both wheels) and the off-road mode (ABS deactivated at the rear), a third mode now enables the ABS to be switched off completely. A useful development that will delight off-road enthusiasts.

An engine as playful as ever

As for the engine, it’s no surprise to find the CP2 689 cc twin-cylinder still working wonders. With its 73 hp and generous 68 Nm of torque, it doesn’t set the fastest lap times, but its flexibility and availability make it an extremely pleasant companion on the road.

This engine is a real success, both on the road and on the trail. It pulls at low revs, picks up without flinching and delivers its power in a very linear fashion. It inspires confidence, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider. Its throaty, metallic sound is as pleasant as ever, and its fuel consumption remains contained (around 4.2 L/100 km during our test ride), allowing a range of just over 350 km on the 16-liter fuel tank.

An ironclad chassis

Where the Ténéré continues to shine is in its chassis. With its long-travel KYB suspension (210 mm at the front, 200 mm at the rear), it handles irregularities with disconcerting ease. On bumpy trails, it stays on course without banging, and on the road, it remains stable and predictable, even in tight cornering.

The 43 mm inverted fork is fully adjustable, as is the rear shock. This is a real plus for adapting the bike to your weight, riding style or travel loads. As for the tubular chassis, it combines lightness and rigidity. It’s well-balanced and easy to handle, even for those not used to adventure bikes.

At 204 kg fully loaded, the Ténéré remains relatively light in its class. On the trails, it handles with an ease sometimes reminiscent of a slightly fat enduro. In town, it remains tall (875 mm seat height), but not intimidating thanks to its slimness and progressive clutch.

Technology: the right mix

To its credit, Yamaha continues to take a minimalist approach to technology. No driving modes or cascading electronic aids here. The emphasis is on simplicity and reliability.

Nevertheless, the new TFT display adds a welcome touch of modernity. The integration of Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to follow your navigation directly on the screen is a welcome addition when traveling. Yamaha also offers a USB-C socket, for connected warriors traveling the trails in the backcountry.

The all-round LED lighting is effective, especially with its clearly visible daytime running lights, and the 3-mode ABS system is an undeniable improvement for those who want to push a little further off-road.

A bike built for adventure

On the road, the 2025 Ténéré 700 is a born traveler. It holds its course well, offers a natural riding position (both standing and seated), and its seat comfort is slightly improved on this version. It’s not a long-distance tourer like the GS or Africa Twin, but for road/trail enthusiasts, it’s an excellent compromise.

On the trails, it always impresses with its ease of handling and ability to take a beating. The low center of gravity, the smoothness of the engine and the quality of the suspension mean that you can step out into the distance without fear.

A smooth evolution

The 2025 Yamaha Ténéré 700 doesn’t revolutionize anything, but it refines an already solid copy. It’s still aimed at adventurers, solo travelers and those with a passion for lost paths. It’s an honest, versatile and, above all, incredibly engaging motorcycle that just begs to be ridden and stepped on.

Highlights

  1. CP2 engine: reliable, smooth and pleasant at all engine speeds.
  2. Balanced chassis: efficient suspension, solid chassis and excellent off-road performance.
  3. Well-integrated new technologies: TFT screen, 3-mode ABS, modern connectivity without overloading.

Areas for improvement

  1. Seat height: still a little high for smaller riders. A lowered version would be welcome.
  2. Wind protection: windshield a little tight over long distances at high speeds (could be improved or replaced for touring).

In conclusion, the 2025 Ténéré 700 version continues to set its path with confidence. It doesn’t give in to electronic overkill and remains true to its original philosophy: a true adventure bike, accessible, high-performance and full of character. A must-have for those who prefer off-roading to highway riding, and authenticity to sophistication.

The 4Riders Magazine team would like to thank Yamaha Canada for making this test ride possible.
