There is something special, almost historic, about this test… We had the opportunity to test two new electric motorcycles: the 2025 Can-Am Origin and Pulse. These motorcycles officially mark the manufacturer’s return to two-wheelers. It’s a long-awaited comeback, made possible by entirely new technology. Not only do these two models represent a significant step forward for the brand, they also show how keen BRP is to reclaim its place in the motorcycle market. Not by copying the vast majority of what is already out there, but by offering a unique and innovative product.
A page of history

To fully understand the importance of these two models, we need to look back at the history of Can-Am. The division was created in 1973 with off-road motorcycles, mainly motocross and enduro bikes. The motorcycles were already equipped with the famous ROTAX engines at the time. The brand quickly established itself and gained a solid reputation. However, with fierce competition from Japanese manufacturers and a strategic reorientation, Bombardier ended the motorcycle program in 1987.
For almost twenty years, this legendary name reappeared only in nostalgia, until BRP brought back the Can-Am name through ATVs in 1997. Then, on the road in 2007 with the famous three-wheeled Spyder and, later still, the Ryker.

Finally, nearly 50 years after the first motorcycle, Can-Am is FINALLY returning to two wheels for 2025. Not with a gasoline-powered machine, but in a purely electric format. This is in line with new market trends and BRP’s innovation objectives.

The arrival of the Origin and Pulse is therefore symbolic. They represent a blend of heritage and modernity. Of boldness and experience. Can-Am is not making a timid comeback: the manufacturer is arriving with two very distinct offerings, each designed for a specific use. Fortunately, we had the chance to test both models to fully understand their differences. This also allowed us to understand what types of riders they are aimed at. To sum up each one in a few words…

The Can-Am Origin is the most versatile, with proven off-road capabilities and a “dual-purpose” approach.

The Can-Am Pulse is road-oriented, designed for urban environments and enthusiasts of short, dynamic getaways.
Two motorcycles, the same technological base, but two very different experiences with components specific to each.
Style, design, and features

Of course, as soon as you approach the 2025 Can-Am Origin and Pulse, you notice that the manufacturer wanted to create an identity. Something modern and innovative without relying on what is currently being done. The look is distinctive, angular, and futuristic, without necessarily falling into extravagance. The proportions are compact, the silhouette is sleek, and several elements reflect the focus on functionality behind the design.
A touchscreen that has it all!

The huge 10.25-inch touchscreen immediately grabs your attention. It’s massive, bright, and worthy of a new-generation motorcycle. The interface is simple, well organized, and provides quick access to the different modes. Of course, it displays range information and various settings. However, it’s worth noting that at this stage, Apple CarPlay is included, but Android Auto is still missing. This is something that many users will surely notice and could be a deal breaker . This motorcycle is aimed at a tech-savvy clientele, and connectivity is one of the key features that needs to be satisfied, in my opinion.
Did you say accessories?
As BRP has accustomed us to its many vehicle ranges, there are of course accessories available. And it must be said that there are already several on the menu, as this photo shows.

What differentiates the Pulse and the Origin?
The two motorcycles share a visual base, but differ in their posture. The Pulse features road geometry, a lower position, asphalt-oriented tires, and suspension optimized for stability.

The Origin, on the other hand, directly displays its dual-purpose character. Dunlop D605 studded tires, high ground clearance. Long-travel KYB suspension and a more rugged style that evokes adventure and the freedom to explore.
ROTAX E-POWER engine at the heart of innovation

At the heart of the 2025 Can-Am Origin and Pulse is the ROTAX E-POWER engine. This is a brand-new technology developed specifically for the needs of Can-Am electric motorcycles. It will subsequently be reused in other vehicles such as the Outlander ATV. The motor offers a respectable 35 kW of power, equivalent to 47 horsepower. However, this figure on paper is not particularly exciting. On the other hand, the immediate torque of 53 lb-ft completely changes the experience. Where a gasoline engine has to rev up and takes time to reach its maximum power, the electric motor delivers everything without any delay.

The result is simple. You get surprising acceleration. The Pulse, optimized for the road, goes from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The Origin takes 4.3 seconds. This is mainly due to its off-road orientation, large wheels, and different geometry. In both cases, acceleration is linear, constant, smooth, and instantaneous. You turn the handle and it takes off immediately with a slight electric whir. This is particularly pleasant when overtaking, exiting corners, and starting quickly after a stop.
Battery with cooling system (or heater)

The battery, shown in yellow, is an integral part of the frame. This is an ingenious choice, as it reduces the overall weight and lowers the center of gravity. At 187 kg (412 lb), the motorcycle remains reasonably light for an electric bike. It is also very comparable to motorcycles with combustion engines.

Keeping the weight low is also a very good thing considering the Origin’s dual-purpose design. The thermal cooling system is also a key feature. It keeps the battery at an optimal temperature, ensuring consistent performance. Even during long rides or on hot days, performance is maintained. Nevertheless, we wanted to push the limits, and on two occasions the temperatures exceeded the parameters. At that point, the power is simply reduced for a short period of time. Nothing too drastic, and full power is restored within a reasonable time frame.
Projected range and charging

This is probably one of the most sensitive topics when it comes to electric motorcycles. The Pulse offers a claimed range of 130 km in combined driving and up to 160 km in optimal conditions. For the Origin, it’s more like 115 km and up to 145 km.
Of course, riding style, temperature, elevation, and rider weight all influence these figures. Nevertheless, we found that the advertised values are relatively realistic if you manage your riding style. Obviously, a little over 100 km for a dual-purpose or high-performance urban motorcycle is neither huge nor ridiculous. It just requires a little more planning for your trips.
– In the city or suburbs, it’s perfect, and that’s where the motorcycle can make the best use of regeneration. So you can achieve better range.
– On the way to your off-road playground, you just need to be aware that you can’t go as far as you could with a full tank of gas… Unless you’re already close to where you’re riding.

To summarize charging times:
In terms of charging, performance is decent, and here’s a simple summary:
- With a Level 2 (240 V) charging station, it will take 50 minutes to go from 20% to 80% or 1 hour and 30 minutes for a full cycle (0-100%).
- With a Level 1 (120 V) charging station, it takes 3 hours and 10 minutes to go from 20% to 80% and a good 5 hours and 15 minutes for a full charge (0 to 100%).
For urban users or those who have a Level II charging station at home, this is ideal for reducing charging times. Finally, it is often enough to plug in the motorcycle in the evening to have a full battery in the morning. Even with the 120 V (Level I) wall plug cord.
On the road or when exploring, it’s more limiting, but again, these motorcycles are primarily aimed at people who ride near urban centers. Or who head out to their off-road playground from their cottage with access to a charging station.

Riding modes, regeneration, and technological experience
Can-Am has integrated several riding modes that truly transform the bike’s behavior depending on the situation. There are Eco, Rain, Normal, and Sport+ modes. And exclusively for the Origin, Off-road and Off-road+ modes. Each mode adjusts throttle response, regeneration, and handlebar sensitivity. In other cases, there’s even torque management to prevent loss of traction. The off-road modes are particularly useful with the Origin, allowing for better control of the bike in technical sections where instant power could become difficult to control. It’s also possible to disable ABS and traction control for the more experienced off-road riders. We loved it!
Regenerative braking is also a standout feature. It’s smooth, predictable, and pleasant. As a bonus, it adds range while allowing you to ride with minimal use of the brakes. In the city, it’s a charm!

Another feature I loved and found very practical is the reverse mode. With an electric motorcycle, it’s easy to implement and so handy for parking or tight maneuvers. Or even for turning around on an off-road section that becomes impassable.
Mechanical features
One of the most interesting technical choices here is worth mentioning. The chain is completely covered and continuously lubricated in a sealed housing. This solution protects it from dust and rocks when riding off-road. It also serves as a structural element, like a swing arm.

In addition, it almost completely eliminates maintenance with the use of an automatic tensioner that maintains perfect tension at all times. With an electric motorcycle, where maintenance is already minimal, it’s a winning combination.
Another obvious advantage of the 2025 Can-Am Origin and Pulse… Silence! With no combustion engine, no vibrations, and a completely isolated drive train, the motorcycle produces very little noise. It’s a unique and very enjoyable sensation on the road and even more so off-road. You can fully enjoy the scenery and listen to your surroundings. Conversely, on the road, it makes you aware of all the wind noise and other mechanical elements. Let’s just say it’s very unsettling at first.
Suspension and overall handling

When it comes to suspension, Can-Am has done things right, especially for the dual-purpose version. The Origin benefits from a generous 255 mm (10 in.) of travel at both the front and rear. It uses excellent KYB shock absorbers that are perfectly calibrated for the occasion and adjustable as needed. In addition, the good ground clearance of nearly 11 inches deserves honorable mention. Traction is provided by Dunlop D605 tires on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels. All of this gives the Origin a true dual-purpose motorcycle personality. It can venture onto gravel, forest trails, and light technical sections without any problems.

The Pulse, on the other hand, definitely doesn’t have the same components, but it benefits from a more road-oriented geometry that makes it extremely stable and precise in corners. Its size is very compact, giving you a feeling of absolute control. It’s extremely maneuverable and a thrill to ride. In both cases, Can-Am has clearly understood the needs of motorcyclists and provided them with the right features.

To sum up the riding experience?
When riding, you immediately notice how compact, lightweight, and easy to handle the bikes are. The low center of gravity helps enormously, especially in tight maneuvers. However, it takes a little while to get used to it: no clutch, no gearbox, with power always at your fingertips. Some off-road situations require a little more finesse at first. But after a few minutes, you get the hang of it.
The overall solidity of the bikes inspires confidence. The linear acceleration is a real pleasure, and the silence completely transforms your relationship with the terrain. The Pulse excels on asphalt, especially on small winding roads, while the Origin is perfectly at home in mixed use. And even more so off-road, much to my delight.

Areas for improvement
No product is perfect, and the 2025 Can-AM Origin and Pulse have a few areas for improvement:
1. The high price
With a base price exceeding $15,000, it’s not within everyone’s reach. And at that price, not having a passenger seat included (a $500 option) is difficult to justify.

2. The finish of some plastics and exposed wires
Some cables are more exposed than we would have liked, especially for a model that is intended for off-road use. Splashes and debris could eventually cause problems in the long term. Some panels seem ”softer” and more susceptible to scratches than expected.
3. Non-lockable trunk
A minor annoyance, especially for those who carry valuables in the only original compartment. Don’t forget your phone in there.
4. The absence of Android Auto
A notable omission for a modern motorcycle with a touchscreen that plays the technology card.
In conclusion

Despite a few drawbacks, the 2025 Can-Am Origin and Pulse are a real success for a first step into the world of electric motorcycles. The manufacturer presents two serious, high-performance machines that are fun to ride and well suited to their target customer base.
The Origin offers impressive versatility, capable of riding comfortably on the road while venturing into light to moderate off-road terrain.
The Pulse, on the other hand, is a dynamic, stable urban motorcycle that is incredibly enjoyable to ride in silence.
The overall experience is positive, modern, and refreshing. It’s clear that BRP has put in the necessary effort to get back on two wheels. They’ve come up with something that stands out, is well designed, and is aligned with the future of mobility.
