For some years now, LYNX has been turning heads in the North American snowmobile world. This year, the Scandinavian manufacturer is back with a vengeance with the redesign of its 2026 LYNX Brutale RE. A machine designed to go off-road, dominate rough trails and offer versatility in the worst conditions. Let’s see what this beast has up its sleeve.
Radien2 styling and platform
For 2026, the Brutal makes its debut on the Radien2 platform, benefiting from a number of improvements in the process. True to its name, it features an aggressive design with angular lines. Its wide chassis gives the impression that the snowmobile is ready to crush everything in its path. The cockpit is sleek but effective. The high handlebars with handguards, low seat height and controls are clearly designed for fast, upright riding. In addition to the redesigned panels, there are, of course, the powerful LED headlights and, above all, the 10.25” touchscreen.
This screen comes as standard on this model, and now features integrated GPS navigation. In other words, you’ll retain your orientation even if you lose the cellular network, as in the past. This makes perfect sense for a snowmobile geared to off-trail riding.
Other new features…
In addition, the 2026 LYNX Brutal RE features new, narrower running boards, 36 mm on each side. They feature wider openings to evacuate snow even more efficiently. Off-piste capabilities are also improved, with reduced drag.
A nice addition is undoubtedly the fold-down snow guard to allow snow to exit the tunnel more freely. In deep snow, this gives a drastic advantage in pushing the limits of this snowmobile. The system is simple, ingenious and takes just 2 seconds to operate. Then, when you need to get back on the trails, you lower it to maximize cooling.
Here’s a roundup of other new features on this model:
- High-powered 4-piston Brembo brake with adjustable lever for optimum ergonomics.
- An updated steering system for an improved driving feel.
- A 4ᵉ engine mount for the 850 E-TEC to promote constant engine alignment.
2 engines on the program…
Under the hood of the 2026 LYNX Brutal RE are 2 engines that no longer need much introduction. The Rotax 850 E-TEC (2-stroke naturally-aspirated) and 900 ACE Turbo R (4-stroke turbocharged). Our test model featured the famous Rotax850 2-stroke with direct injection. This engine has proven itself for its explosive power and rapid response. Offering around 165 hp, this block gives the Brutal RE excellent dynamism. Above all, it’s 53 pounds lighter than the 4-stroke version. Swinging the balance at just 571 pounds for a snowmobile of this size, that’s excellent.
What sets the wide (20-inch) version apart is the impressive efficiency of transmitting all that power to the ground. ThepDrive CVT transmission is optimally calibrated to match the engine. The machine delivers crisp acceleration and lively acceleration, even in deep snow or on steep climbs.
No transmission with gears… Why?
It’s also worth mentioning that this version doesn’t come with a High-Low ratio transmission like its Commander REsibling. This is to optimize weight and limit the number of mechanical components. The result is a slight loss of versatility in favor of off-road capability.
The cooling system is also well thought-out, with a front radiator combined with a rear heat exchanger. This keeps performance constant even at low speeds and in the most demanding conditions.
Driving impressions
In the field, the 2026 LYNX Brutal RE lives up to its name by offering a very dynamic, robust ride in deep snow. This is a snowmobile made to devour virgin terrain and float on snow fast. In truth, the manufacturer characterizes it as 70% off-trail oriented, and we agree. The traction offered by the 20-inch track is impressive. You can climb, float and make your way with authority.
The feeling you get when riding it is the rigidity and precision of the chassis, combined with exceptional suspension. KYB 36/46 shock absorbers with Kashima coating absorb literally everything. Whether it’s deep bumps, jumps or one bump after another, the suspension keeps you stable and on course. At the rear, the EasyRide+ suspension geometry with reinforced rails allows you to ride wide without fear of breakage. On trails, the rear suspension enables powerful corner exits without excessive weight transfer. Once again, the versatility of this hybrid snowmobile shines on all types of terrain.
Riding precision
The 39” ski spacing is just the right balance between good trail stability. While maintaining pleasant maneuverability in powder snow. The LFS+ front suspension provides excellent ground feel for intuitive handling in all conditions. The revised ride offers enhanced maneuverability while remaining lightweight. Blade DS+ skis offer all the bite needed on the trails with the deep keel. Their width allows you to float on sections of fresh, untangled snow.
We have to admit that this snowmobile is not really for beginners. It requires committed driving, good technique and physical fitness to handle it well. Considering its track width and considerable weight, you need anticipation and technique to give it the right heading in deep snow. Those who like to ride upright and dominate the machine will enjoy hours of riding.
Trail-oriented
When it comes to trail riding, the Brutal RE doesn’t suddenly become very docile. It retains its rugged, solid DNA, which takes points away from its raw performance. The motorization expresses itself strongly with the wide track that doesn’t filter the power in any way… As a result, the front end becomes very light and the practically non-existent pressure on the skis often leads to understeer. So you need to operate it carefully and plan your turns in advance, while limiting your ardor on the restart. Despite all this, its unique character makes us love it even on trails after just a few minutes on board. In short, it performs well on trails, but prefers to roam the backcountry.
Areas for improvement
As we all know, no snowmobile is perfect… Here are a few areas for improvement:
- Weight and handling at low speeds: the width and weight (especially the 4-stroke) make themselves felt in narrower sections. Or when trying to maneuver at low speed. You need a good level of physical fitness to handle it with ease at all times.
- Fuel consumption: like all Rotax 850 E-TEC-equipped snowmobiles, fuel and oil consumption are a major consideration. Especially with its huge track. So, if you’re planning long outings without refueling, you’ll have to think about it. It’s not catastrophic, but you can tell the beast is thirsty!
- Affordability: with its high price tag, well over $20,000, the Brutal RE 20” is in a high-end category. Not for every budget.
Conclusion
The 2026 LYNX Brutal RE (20″) is a versatile snowmobile for both off-road and bumpy trails. It’s designed to appeal to those seeking a raw, uncompromising experience in the worst winter conditions. With its power, high-caliber suspension and traction, it defines what you’d expect from a versatile snowmobile.
