Ideal for adventurers looking for comfort on the trails or a powder escapade. Or to put it to the test in utility mode. The 2025 Ski-Doo Expedition Xtreme is a versatile snowmobile, combining power and performance on all types of terrain. Its versatility and capabilities proved impressive throughout our long-term test. Discover (or rediscover) with us this machine ready to take on any challenge.
Styling design and generous standard equipment
The 2025 Ski-Doo Expedition Xtreme is based on the REV Gen4 platform we’ve been familiar with for several seasons. Although it’s nearing the end of its career, to be replaced by the new generation in 2026, it delivers solid performance. The chassis is light, rigid and precise. Having tested the 2 generations, we can confirm that, apart from the redesigned bodywork, the structure is comparable between the 2.
The rider’s position is perfectly centered and comfortable. The low seat height provides good support on the trails. At the same time, it’s easy to stand up, ideal for movement in fresh snow.
The Expedition Xtreme’s design is just aggressive enough, with chiselled lines and an impeccable finish. We also note the presence of the sturdy, perfectly integrated front bumper. Controls are simple and intuitive. What’s more, the basic digital dial provides all the information you need without any “ fuzz”. Even so, it would have been nice to have the big 10.25” touchscreen. You’ll have to settle for the 2026 model to get it, if that’s a must for you.
Two engine choices on the menu
The Expedition Xtreme comes with 2 engine choices. Either the 165 hp 850 E-TEC 2-stroke or the turbocharged 4-stroke. During our test ride, we were treated to the 180 HP produced by the Rotax900 ACE Turbo R engine.
To transmit all this power, we can count on the huge 20“ wide, 154” long track with 1.8” studs. All in all, an ideal combination for all kinds of tasks on this versatile snowmobile.
A “switch” on the dashboard modulates power delivery on three levels (Eco, Normal and Sport). These riding modes optimally adjust throttle response and available power. Perfectly suited to the model’s wide range of applications.
It’s essential to emphasize the presence of the transmission. Ensuring optimum use in all situations. In “LOW” mode, the snowmobile is ready to take on demanding tasks such as towing or off-roading. Maximum power is instantly available with a reduced gear ratio. Conversely, the “HIGH” mode enables high-speed riding on trail sections. Once again, versatility is clearly the name of the game, and the transmission is a must to enable it.
Riding impressions
This year, I decided to opt for a more family-friendly snowmobile, with the arrival of a baby limiting my mountain outings. So I opted for a multi-purpose snowmobile to work on the family land in Beauce. Or for shorter outings on trails and a few off-piste outings. That’s why the 2025 Ski-Doo Expedition Xtreme seemed the ideal choice. And I’m absolutely right. Here are my driving impressions, starting with a more utilitarian aspect that I rediscovered this season aboard it.
For work
First of all, from a utility point of view, we should mention that the Xtreme version is not equipped with a trailer hitch. You’ll have to turn to the accessories catalog. Although available, it would have been preferable to include the trailer hitch on this model to fully offer the standard versatility.
For work, the Ski-Doo Expedition Xtreme wins points with its “LOW.” gear ratio transmission. This provides an excellent towing capacity of 1200 lbs in its HD rear bumperless configuration. This made it easy to haul a sleigh around the sugar shack. The Multi-LinQ plate also lets you take everything you need with you. And once again, a long list of accessories is available. In short, a solid foundation for your expeditions and the many tasks you want to accomplish.
It’s worth noting that with the rear suspension geometry (SC-5U), the last lockable portion is perfect for maximum traction. Also, reverse maneuvers are efficient by unlocking the system to promote flotation.
I also have nothing but good things to say about the hyper-efficient cooling system. It always did an exemplary job, even at very low speeds and with heavy loads. All in all, the Expedition Xtreme fully assumes its role as a work snowmobile.
After several trail rides… Here’s the verdict.
As soon as you step on the throttle, the sound of the engine is immediately noticeable. The throaty, omnipresent sound tickles the rider’s excitement. The clutch is perfectly calibrated. Allowing the power to be transmitted instantly to the snow.
After just a few minutes of riding, it’s clear that this snowmobile offers very powerful acceleration and acceleration. Wrists are hard at work, and you have to hold on tight to keep control. Its aggressive track and 1.8” studs ensure exceptional grip on groomed trails. Overall, handling is impressive for a snowmobile of this size, considering its wide track. In fact, its handling far surpasses that of other comparable models on the market. Although the snowmobile isn’t exclusively made for trails, it’s still a real pleasure to drive… Ready to devour hundreds of kilometers a day.
However, it must be borne in mind that its long, wide track can induce understeer in curves. Because of its exceptional grip, it can sometimes reduce the pressure on the skis. It is therefore necessary to manage the throttle well during successive turns. One thing is certain: the Expedition Xtreme is a pleasure to ride every time you come out of a curve. With powerful acceleration that never fails to impress its rider.
What about off-road driving?
Despite its relatively high weight (619 lbs), the Xtreme stands out for its impressive agility in deep snow and its sustained performance. Thanks to its long, wide track and DS 3 skis, it offers exceptional flotation in the snow. Allowing you to explore a wide variety of snowy terrain, as long as it’s not too steep. However, it’s important not to try too hard to climb steep slopes. It can’t compete with mountain-only snowmobiles like the Summit.
On the other hand, on more open or relatively flat terrain, it’s ideal. Transitions from one side to the other are easy. Even in steep terrain, it’s possible to performside-hill maneuvers while maintaining your line. That’s amazing for a snowmobile with a 20” wide track! Steering is precise, and riding in powder is a real pleasure.
During slalom maneuvers, the 39” ski spacing slows down movement a little. For technical maneuvers between obstacles, the effort required is obviously greater compared to a narrower snowmobile.
At all times, the fun factor is there, and you’ll find yourself pushing the machine to its limits. This all-round snowmobile remains a pleasant surprise thanks to its impressive capabilities, and is no slouch in the powder.

Points of improvement noted during long-term testing
- The trailer hitch is not included on this model. So you’ll need to plan ahead to be able to work with the snowmobile.
