People who use their snowmobiles to earn a living are very different from those who thrive on the thrill and adventure of recreational riding. Yamaha consciously knows what it takes to get the job done right in extreme winter conditions. The simple design and reliability of the 2021 Yamaha Transporter 800’s long, high-tech articulated track meet those needs. At its heart beats a reliable 794cc two-stroke engine with a recoil starter that doubles as an auxiliary starter. Must-haves like a rugged rack, a sturdy tow hitch, a long-range fuel tank and real protection from the elements all come standard to enhance the days of hard-working winter folks.

HIGHLIGHTS

The second-generation 794cc 2-stroke twin-cylinder engine features a battery-free, ECM-controlled fuel injection system and an electronic oil injection system. Auxiliary boost valves move in three stages to control the flow of fuel into the tuned exhaust pipe with a stainless steel exhaust manifold and muffler. The exhaust detonation temperature sensor (EDTS) monitors the system. Spark ignition is via a digital CDI system with detonation sensor; cooling is via a liquid heat exchanger. The electric starter is standard.

The long-travel rear suspension uses a spring-loaded, articulated rear section that allows the rear support wheels to move upward in an arc. This means that when the snowmobile travels on trails with cascading bumps, it behaves much like a snowmobile with a shorter track. This joint also helps the snowmobile move in reverse, as it helps lead the track over the snow, rather than sinking into it. Another interesting feature of this suspension is its ability to lock its spar so that it does not articulate, thus maximizing traction when towing a heavy load. A simple push pin is used to engage the spar extension to help camp the skis on the ground and take full advantage of the traction of the 153-inch track.

The long 153-inch Power Claw track has 2.25-inch high bars on a 3-inch pitch. The forward curved edge of these lugs works great in deep powder and bites into the snow with gusto when towing a heavy load or blazing new trails. The 153-inch length combines with the articulated suspension frame to get the job done, no matter how tough it is.

The Transporter 800 incorporates the styling elements of Yamaha’s sport snowmobile line. Its new aerodynamic design helps improve airflow around the engine and into the pulley compartment. The body profile has been carefully designed to deflect snow away from the rider when riding in deep snow.

PERFORMANCE

The drive pulley of the TVC transmission utilizes a roller bearing-equipped input shaft; this drive pulley ensures that uniform tension is maintained on the belt, without requiring manual adjustment to counteract wear. This design provides a very low ratio engagement point, which helps reduce belt slippage and wear initially, without compromising the higher ratio when the system is disengaged. This low first gear is especially beneficial when hauling heavy loads.

Electronic fuel injection delivers fuel very efficiently to two injection points in the cylinder, depending on engine speed, maximizing torque and throttle response. Computer-controlled fuel injection provides reliable cold weather starting, maximizes range and delivers low exhaust emissions.

The sensor monitors cylinder vibration and communicates to the ECM if there is combustion accompanied by detonation caused by improper fuel metering or poor running conditions. In such cases, the ECM adjusts the ignition timing to prevent engine damage.

To restart the engine and shift into reverse, simply push a button. The back-up alarm sounds once you’re in reverse, and the warning tone continues to sound until you push the button again to turn off the ignition and start moving forward. It’s a simple, lightweight and effective way to get out of a tight spot.

The Transporter 800 is equipped with an oversized 52-liter fuel tank. This capacity, combined with the frugal consumption of the DSI engine (with two-stage fuel injection), allows you to cover a lot of kilometers between fill-ups.

The sturdy tubular rack holds the gas cans and equipment needed to get through the day’s tasks. An additional storage bag is located under the seat. Finally, a sturdy articulated tow hitch is included for towing various items.

MANIABILITY

Yamaha’s lightweight mountain skis deliver everything you need to waltz through deep snow. Their large footprint helps increase lift and actively lifts the front section of the snowmobile into deep powder. Traction bars on the top of the skis help keep your feet firmly planted when the ride gets really rough. Their wide, deep keel reduces the effort required at the handlebars, but it also delivers predictable handling that inspires confidence-both in hard-packed snow and in freshly fallen snow.

The rugged Hayes Stealth hydraulic brake master cylinder is paired with a new notched Stealth brake lever to provide excellent modulation, feel and braking power.

The SRV front suspension geometry is designed to manage the camber of the spindles in order to minimize the variation in parallelism, maximize the bite in turns and inspire confidence in the rider, regardless of the trail conditions. The delta arms are mounted at a 30° angle to the centerline of the snowmobile to effectively distribute the impact throughout the frame. Similarly, the front shocks are mounted directly on the head rail so that trail forces are directed to the strongest section of the frame. A wide delta arm gap minimizes front suspension deflection and also stress on the front suspension, resulting in smooth, confident cornering. The narrow ski spread of only 38 inches is great for maneuvering around trail obstacles.

CONFORT

The tall, narrow, lightweight mountain seat is shorter and more tapered in the front than our standard trail seat. It makes it easier for the rider to move sideways and improves the ergonomics of stand-up riding.

Banish the wind and chill of winter with a sculpted, functional windshield. At the top is a small lip that deflects wind and snow up and over the speeding snowmobiler, while its flared edges provide added protection and warmth to the rider’s hands.

Two bright quartz-halogen bulbs light your way brilliantly. Dual bulb redundancy means your path is always lit when you return.

The myriad of easy-to-read digital gauges display a variety of critical information. Speed, fuel level, distance traveled, tachometer data, altitude, temperatures and more are just a glance away. Switching functions is now a breeze using the controls on the left handle. There’s even a clock so you can extend the fun to the last minute!
